“The Silence Between Us” by: Alison Gervais
Recommended Age: 15/16+
320 pages
Description: Deaf teen Maya moves across the country and must attend a hearing school for the first time. As if that wasn't hard enough, she also has to adjust to the hearing culture, which she finds frustrating. As Maya looks past graduation and focuses on her future dreams, nothing, not even an unexpected romance, will derail her pursuits or cause her to question her own self worth.
My Rating: 3.5/5
This book did a wonderful job discussing the difficulties of a deaf high school girl attending a hearing school. After reading this book, readers will have insight into the struggles of communication and everyday activities. In that regard, this book was very good.
However, I have something qualms with the romance side of things . . . honestly I feel like the main male character is such a red flag. He felt very pushy (primary example: he kisses without consent) (-1 star)’. It was not necessarily bad but it didn’t give me that cozy romance feel. It felt very odd (in my opinion).
