“Kit Learns a Lesson” by: Valerie Tripp

This is the 2nd book in the American Girl Kit series by Valerie Tripp. The first book has been reviewed here.

Recommended Age: 8

Description: Kit hopes her dad will find a job soon so that everything can return to normal. But a trip to the soup kitchen shows Kit how much the Depression has changed everything.

My Rating: 5/5

I enjoyed this book! My biggest criticism is that I did not appreciate how Kit shared one character’s personal information and it was not addressed as wrong later in the book. I found this to be disrespectful to that character and their family.

Things to be aware of in “Kit Learns a Lesson”

Language:

  • 1 “gosh”
  • 3 “stupid”
  • Mild name calling including “bum.”

Violence:

  • A mention of suicide (not in the actual story, but in the “looking back” historical section)
